311 Interesting Facts How To Use A Model Airbrush | Vallejo Model Color – How to airbrush tutorial
- The airbrush is extremely well built and is a joy to use. The reason why I opted for the Infinity instead of the cheaper Evolution, is the Quick Fix preset handle. It is pretty much a needle stop, that has sort of a memory function. With a press of the button at the back end of the handle, you can switch between having the needle stop engaged or disengaged. This is especially useful when you need to switch often between precise and normal work. - Source: Internet
- The simple answer is yes. What airbrushes really need is pressurized air. So, they won’t necessarily need a compressor to operate. - Source: Internet

- For many scale modelers, using a painter’s brush is a cost-effective way to get a clean finish on their model kit. But, a painter’s brush won’t always give the clean finish you want. If you want a more professional finish than what a paintbrush offers, airbrushing is the ideal painting technique to use. - Source: Internet
- A problem with a siphon-feed airbrush that to create the suction necessary for a siphon-feed airbrush, the air flow must be strong enough to “vacuum-up” the paint. A siphon-feed airbrush has a lower limit for how little air pressure you can use. For painting miniatures, the lowest air pressure you can use in a siphon-feed airbrush is often too high for finer detail painting. - Source: Internet
- For models of the most popular scales, there’s no real reason to get anything else than the gravity-fed airbrush. They are very easy to clean and maintain, especially if you choose one with a self-centering nozzle. Moreover, they allow you to use lower air pressure than the siphon-fed airbrushes, which is extremely useful when painting thin lines or mottling. - Source: Internet
- Using an airbrush from 8 inches away through a .2mm needle at 15 psi will yield a mess. Likewise, spraying with a .5mm needle from 1″ away at 25 PSI will be another disaster. - Source: Internet
- Fundamentally, all airbrush guns are equal. A stream of air passes through the paint inside the gun, and the atomized paint then passes through the nozzle to the outside. The guns differ in the placement of the paint cup and the possibilities of regulating the air and paint volume. - Source: Internet
- It takes some time to learn how to achieve a good result with an airbrush. The only way to learn is by practising, and not being too frightened of messing up from time to time. Don’t be overly hard on yourself: modelling is supposed to be fun! - Source: Internet
- Just like Tamiya’s airbrushes, the Gunze products are made in the same factory as Iwata airbrushes. However, the price difference is staggering. This is almost the same airbrush as Iwata’s Custom Micron, apart from being sold for half the price. - Source: Internet
- Some of our airbrushes are best for highly specific uses while others are multi-taskers. We categorize our airbrushes into 5 Ways to Spray, each with an abundance of feature options. So you are sure to find an Iwata airbrush that’s right for you. - Source: Internet
- Final Thoughts Airbrushing is fun. Plain and simple. Once you get past some of the routine things you need to do, airbrushing miniatures is a breath of fresh air. Airbrushes give you a new way to paint miniatures and produce results that a regular brush may not be able to recreate without a lot of effort. - Source: Internet
- A hugely popular but not always widely discussed hobby is that of model building. This can take many forms from military models, to railways to scenes from television shows. One of the key factors in this is providing the best possible finish so that your models look great. A lot of keen hobbyists like to use an airbrush for this due to the control and precision and generally great finish it provides. - Source: Internet

- In this case, I can’t really tell you what’s going to be the best choice for you. If you are a car modeler, you’d probably want something with a larger nozzle, such as 0.4mm. This would allow you to lay down the base color and the clear coat quickly and effectively. - Source: Internet
- The airbrush is also often referred to as an airbrush and is a small, handy spray gun. More correctly and unambiguously, one should actually say airbrush gun to it. However, the term airbrush clearly shows what it is all about: paint is artistically applied to a medium. Which painting grounds these could be, is described further ahead. - Source: Internet
- It requires complete technical expertise to use an airbrush. Extensive practice on cheap objects is a prerequisite before professional usage of airbrushes. Without proper experience and skill, you cannot produce attractive, heart-felt color shades. - Source: Internet
- In a gravity feed system, paint is drawn into an airbrush from a color cup (also called a fluid cup) mounted on top of the airbrush. It is called gravity feed because the force of gravity helps spray material move through the airbrush. This allows the airbrush to spray at lower air pressures. - Source: Internet
- This thing has a really strange name just like many other Gunze/GSI products (I will never forget the typo – “Mr.Retarded – Mild” – which I’ve seen in one online store). But – it is, in fact, one of the best airbrushes for fine detail work you can possibly get. - Source: Internet

- After the main assembly, when it’s time for the main paintwork, wash the model a second time and let it dry for a day or two. This second washing is essential for removing handling grease from your fingers and dust. It may feel strange to wash a model aircraft the same way as a plate or drinking glass, but don’t be afraid – it will not melt unless the water is hot. - Source: Internet
- Now turn the Compressor on to generate optimized pressure for airbrushing. Usually, pressure is kept between the range of 1.5bar and 2.5bar. - Source: Internet
- The air loses its ability to hold moisture through compression. This escaping water can be expelled with the compressed air in a normal compressor. If water is forced through the airbrush gun with the air stream, unsightly paint blobs appear on the artwork. A compressor designed for airbrushing works against this by having a water separator. In it, the water is collected and kept away from the outflowing compressed air. - Source: Internet
- Model Air has a wide variety of colors each based on research by past and present military officials. You can use it without diluting or diluting with a flow improver or airbrush thinner. It is about the equipment of the airbrush, the different painting techniques, and how you create your first and future images. The explanations should begin with the introduction of the airbrush technique. - Source: Internet
- If the paint doesn’t seem to dry to a smooth and even finish, if it cracks, bubbles or appears to “melt” the plastic, it is a sign of some adverse chemical reaction. Most often this is caused by having used the wrong type of paint – like automotive or machine paint. Always use hobby paints, designed for plastic models. It can also be caused by mixing two different kinds of paint. For instance, is it not recommended that you mix AeroMaster with Gunze Sangyo acrylics. - Source: Internet
- If you would like to buy your first airbrush gun, you will be confronted with a few terms that need to be understood before you get started. Basically, there are two types of airbrush guns. They work according to the same principle (airflow atomizes paint) but differ slightly in handling: - Source: Internet
- Conclusion I hope you found this article useful for how to use an airbrush spray booth for painting miniatures. I paint a lot of miniatures for commission work as well as my own models, and airbrushing is an essential tool I use on a regular basis. When painting indoors, the spray booth is an important safety measure, reducing the hazard risk of breathing in aerosolized paint and primer particles. It’s also a useful way to keep your hobby space clean and neat. - Source: Internet

- Lacquer-based paint is not fit for health. It requires special safety measures, and the airbrush painter must wear a respirator or mask. Furthermore, it needs special cleaning agents to clean the airbrush gun. - Source: Internet
- The safety of airbrushing depends on your health and ability to resist the risk of inhaling any of the oversprayed product. At the very least, make sure that whatever you spray through your airbrush has a non-toxic label. Although the non-toxic designation doesn’t preclude you from getting ill, it may reduce your chances of serious harm. - Source: Internet
- Usually, an airbrush gun is operated with a compressor. Special airbrush compressors are available for this purpose, which are equipped with an air pressure regulator, pressure gauge, water separator, and sometimes also with an air tank. The advantage of these airbrush compressors is that they are particularly quiet in operation and are often handy and relatively light. - Source: Internet
- In principle, any compressor that can be regulated in a range between 1.5 and 2.5 bar can be used to operate an airbrush gun. In this respect, an inexpensive or existing DIY store compressor can certainly be used for your first attempts. - Source: Internet
- Since some colors often mix with each other and do not remain completely “pure,” you should always spray your colors on white paint. This is clearly recommended, for example, if you want to start with the water-soluble airbrush colors on a car hood. Then it should have a white-painted base at this point. - Source: Internet
- The airbrush is the perfect tool because it allows me to spray surface primer and spray paint indoors. I can prime and paint miniatures inside the home without worrying about toxic aerosol fumes. Of course, at the time I didn’t have a spray booth. But given that I spray at very low air pressure, I wasn’t too concerned with overspray. - Source: Internet
- The nozzle is self-centering, making it easy to clean and reassemble. The cup is a little bit different than the one featured on the Infinity and Evolution airbrushes. Instead of being screwed on, this one is simply pushed onto the body of the airbrush. - Source: Internet
- Airbrushes are of rather expensive. A decent airbrush set with an air tank and a compressor as air supply add up to a pretty hefty investment, but if you plan to continue building models for at least a few more years, it’s very well spent money. Investing in an airbrush kit will revolutionize your modelling more than anything! - Source: Internet
- Other helpful tools to have on hand: a turntable at the base of the spray booth for a hands-free painting of all sides of a model, paint stirrers, pipettes and pipe cleaners for mixing and cleaning, and a good light source–preferably one which mimics the lighting conditions on your layout. If your layout room has incandescent bulbs, paint under these. The change in hue provided by a fluorescent light can dramatically change the look of your model. - Source: Internet
- The two airbrushes I would recommend anyone use for spraying primer include the Badger Patriot 105 or an IWATA HP-CS. Both airbrushes are great for spraying thicker mediums, like primers or heavier body paints. These airbrushes give a lot of wiggle room to experiment and are not as prone to clogging as other airbrushes in their class. - Source: Internet
- With some airbrush guns, it is possible to remove the needle protection cap. This also creates thin lines. But be careful: the sensitive needle is exposed when using this method. If the needle is damaged by an impact or if the airbrush gun is dropped, it must be replaced, which is often quite expensive. - Source: Internet
- Cotton Swabs Cotton swabs are very useful for cleaning the smaller parts of the airbrush and inside the paint cup. Tamiya produce scale modelling specific cotton swabs in small sizes that are much more tightly wound than the cosmetic type, and therefore particularly well suited to this job. Foam swabs are also available in various sizes. - Source: Internet
- Don’t crowd the spray booth When using an airbrush spray booth for painting miniatures, it’s important to avoid overcrowding the booth. This will help to ensure that you can spray paint your models efficiently and without any problems. Crowding your spray booth with miniatures will slow you down! - Source: Internet
- Spend some time drawing pictures freehand, to get used to the airbrush‘s action. Write your name with it. Pencil in some guidelines and practice spraying a straight line of uniform width. Then make two straight lines of the same uniform width. Another classic exercise is to draw a grid of lines, a few inches apart, and spray a dot on each intersection, each dot the same size. - Source: Internet
- This is another hugely popular airbrush manufactured by Iwata. The Revolution is their basic line of airbrushes, that are still made in Japan. There are no special bells and whistles involved. It is a simple airbrush designed to be a workhorse. - Source: Internet
- Keep your face outside of the spray booth It bears repeating for those who like to get “close” to their work. I’m not sure what else to say! 5. Spray toward the back of the spray booth (toward the filter) As with the above tips for keeping your paint job contained in the spray booth, you’ll want to make sure you point your airbrush in the correct direction–away from yourself and toward the back of the spray booth. I painted the side of the model by turning it, rather than angling my airbrush sideways. - Source: Internet
- Are you considering an airbrush for painting your miniatures? There are a lot of questions about the usefulness of an airbrush for miniature painting. Is airbrushing miniatures worth it? Can you paint details with an airbrush? Is using an airbrush cheating? On the market, there are a lot of great airbrushes for painting scale models and minis. Even more recent, there are a lot of great painters who now use airbrushes regularly in their amazing miniature painting work. - Source: Internet
- In relation to the previous paragraph, please note, that some airbrushes don’t have the ability to change the nozzle/needle size. You would have to get a new airbrush for that. For others, such as for example the Harder and Steenbeck airbrushes, you will be able to buy needle/nozzle combos in various sizes. - Source: Internet
- Is Airbrushing Miniatures Worth the Effort? Once you get the hang of airbrushing, the airbrush becomes a breath of fresh air. It will change the pace of your miniature painting workflow in a good way. The entire panel of advanced paint blending techniques becomes somewhat easier with an airbrush (depending on the size and complexity of the model, and only after you’ve mastered the tool). - Source: Internet
- These nozzles are usually tiny and must be screwed onto the airbrush. I have to say I am not a huge fan of these. Tighten it too much and you can damage the nozzle or make it sit off-center hampering the atomization and the spray pattern of the paint. Making it too loose comes with other problems as well. - Source: Internet
- On the other hand, a double-action airbrush simultaneously controls paint and airflow. When you press the trigger down, it allows the pressurized airflow. Pulling back the trigger makes the flow of paint into the air stream. - Source: Internet
- The permanently fixed paint cup can hold 2ml of paint which is frankly not that much. Having a smaller cup means that you will have to refill it more often, but that’s only the case when spraying larger areas. On the other hand, this makes the airbrush lighter and it’s easier to see what you are painting when there’s no huge paint cup in the way. - Source: Internet
- When it comes to equipment there are many options out there and I don’t think anyone can claim to be able to say this is “the best” airbrush or “the best” compressor etc. For one thing, no one has tried every product in every situation, and in many cases it comes down to personal preference and what’s “best” for one person might not be for another. So rather than dictate exactly which make and model you should buy, I will guide you through the general features to look for and give feedback on the equipment I have experience with. Then you can make your own choices based on the features you know you’ll need and your budget. - Source: Internet
- – Paint Models In Sections – do this before assembling the model, especially when you have a range of colours and shades to add. In order to prevent going over areas. If you want to paint the finished model, then use masking film to prevent overspray in specific areas. - Source: Internet
- I think it’s reasonable to expect that the total sum needed will be at least 150 dollars. But you know how it goes – buy cheap, buy twice. Cheap and poorly made airbrushes can be a real pain to use and maintain in working conditions. I’ve been there. So I would suggest saving some more money for one of the better airbrushes instead of getting a Chinese Iwata knockoff for 15 bucks. - Source: Internet
- The airbrush is equipped with a 0.35mm nozzle that provides great flexibility. It can be used for detailed work as well as for situations that require wider coverage. For extremely fine details, it’s not as good as the H&S 0.15mm airbrushes or the Iwata’s own Custom Microns though. - Source: Internet
- I am a fan of the self-centering nozzles because they allow me to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the whole airbrush extremely quickly. Not having to deal with a tiny spanner and being afraid of damaging the nozzle is a great plus as well. New nozzles are not exactly cheap. - Source: Internet
- There are lots of different brands of model paints, such as Humbrol, Tamiya, Xtracolour, AeroMaster or Gunze Sangyo. But it all breaks down into basically two different kinds of paint: enamel paints and acrylic paints. Enamels are mineral spirit based, and acrylics are waterbased. - Source: Internet
- It is certainly not the best airbrush you could possibly get, but it gets the job done and is cheap. This makes it a good choice for beginners who don’t wish to spend huge sums on the hobby (yet 😊). The airbrush reviews by customers also clearly reflect, that it is not a bad tool for the price. - Source: Internet
- A dirty nozzle or a faulty needle can cause these irregularities. First clean your airbrush gun thoroughly. If the fault is still not corrected, examine the nozzle and needle with a microscope or magnifying glass. If there is a defect, the corresponding part must unfortunately be replaced. - Source: Internet
- Step #2 – Load your airbrush with your primer Load your primer into your airbrush paint cup. Ideally, your primer should be pre-thinned and ready for airbrushing. Look for a primer consistency of whole milk. The correct viscosity of primer will reduce the risk for clogging and allow you to spray at lower air pressure. Read more about thinning primers below. - Source: Internet
- Best Air Pressure for Airbrushing Miniatures? For painting miniatures, a double-action airbrush will work with a PSI (pressure per square inch) between 0-35 PSI. A good air compressor that I recommend for airbrushing will calibrate to this air pressure range easily. For base coating or large surface area spraying, any PSI will work fine. The only issue with low PSI is the airbrush is more prone to clogging and won’t spray thicker paint very well. READ MORE: BEST AIR COMPRESSORS FOR AIRBRUSHING MINIATURES - Source: Internet
- A cleaning kit is an essential Equipment for airbrushing. The kit includes different kinds of brushes, cleaner solutions, and cleaning pots. If you want to enhance the lifetime of an airbrush, the cleaning kit is a basic requirement. - Source: Internet
- These work similarly to the traditional spray cans. You just push the button or trigger and both the paint and air are delivered at the same time. It’s possible to control the amount of paint delivered by switching to a different nozzle size or by turning the adjustment knob which is present on most single-action airbrushes. A single-action airbrush is easy to use and may be good enough for priming, clear coating, or for large-scale paint jobs, but it’s not as flexible as a double-action airbrush when precision matters. - Source: Internet
- Again, I would pick the 2in1 combo set because it offers good versatility. On the other hand, if you know you only need an airbrush with a fine nozzle, then, by all means, get only the 0.15mm or 0.2mm versions. - Source: Internet
- There’s also a special type of double-action airbrush that has automatic or double-dependent control. With this type, there’s no need to press the trigger down to release air. Instead, the airflow is started automatically when you pull the trigger back and you still retain the control of the paint flow. - Source: Internet
- When I started painting, I picked up an airbrush so I could paint big blocks of terrain quickly. As a miniature tabletop gamer, I wanted to make my own gaming table. This required covering large surfaces of foam, cardboard, and plaster with primer and paint. An aerosol rattle can wasn’t a good option because I worked in on a tiny hobby table in an apartment without good ventilation. - Source: Internet
- In some cases, you can get equally good results using much less expensive materials purchased at the paint section in your hardware store. However, as stated, all paints are not created equally. Just like you wouldn’t paint your car with house paints, your model paints are specially designed with properties that work best for our applications. - Source: Internet
- Paint guns CFMs differ by model and model, although smaller spray guns require a higher CFM than larger options. Typically a spray gun can be less than 10 cm in rated air but if you are using aa air compressor it can be 12 cm if you spray paint. The figure may need higher, but it is important to check the CFM requirement for spray guns and select a compressor exceeding these values. - Source: Internet
- Most airbrushes operate best at between 15 and 30 psi. So you don’t need a huge compressor to provide adequate air. A good compressor should have a moisture trap and a regulator to allow you to adjust the pressure. A reservoir is a huge advantage for providing a constant supply of air and for reducing the run time of the compressor. Quiet running is also a big factor, especially for apartments. - Source: Internet
- Airbrushing has many advantages that other painting techniques cannot offer. With the airbrush technique, for example, you can create extremely fine, infinite color transitions and shades. This allows you to create exceptionally realistic looking paintings. In addition, large areas can be quickly covered with paint. The paint is applied particularly thinly and evenly. - Source: Internet
- Load the primer right into your airbrush unthinned, or a drop of water or thinner, and spray directly on your model. As with Vallejo Surface Primer, you can expect to wait up to 30-60 minutes for the primer to properly dry. To speed up the drying of any surface primer, you can use a hair dryer set on the lowest heat setting. - Source: Internet
- Like any tool, a good quality airbrush will make it easier to produce good results. However, the hand holding the tool has a far greater impact on its performance than the tool itself. In other words, an inexpensive brush in the hands of an experienced artist is sure to deliver better results than the best brush in the hands of a novice. - Source: Internet
- The most common question related to using Vallejo paints with an airbrush is whether or not the paint needs to be thinned. If it does need thinned, how can you do it properly? While it isn’t necessary to thin Vallejo paints for an airbrush, you can if you need to use an airbrush nozzle that is smaller than the standard. The best way to thin is using Vallejo’s own airbrush thinner. - Source: Internet
- In the single-action version, the amount of paint is adjusted and fixed by a wheel. During the spraying process, you can regulate the air pressure and thus the air volume with a lever/knob. This airbrush gun is suitable for simple work. - Source: Internet
- In a double-action airbrush, you operate the trigger two ways to control air and paint. To activate air, you press the trigger down. For paint, you pull back on the trigger lever. With these two action, you have fine control over the paint-air mixture even at very low air pressures. - Source: Internet
- Depending on the type of art, you should also look at how large the nozzles of the supplied airbrush gun are. Because there are different airbrush sets. The smaller areas or fine lines you need to draw, such as those found on fingernails, smaller model kits, or hair on a portrait, the smaller the nozzle should be. - Source: Internet
- This user friendly and versatile airbrush can be used for hairline detail spray, overall spray or for up to 1-1/2" wide background spray. It’s a great multi-purpose airbrush for beginners and students, as well as for advanced artists since it works excellent for most airbrushing applications and also with most types of paint spray media. It’s ideal for hobbies, crafts, auto graphics, temporary tattoos, cake decorating, fine art, nail art and more! - Source: Internet
- Airbrushing is very similar to painting with a spray can, but is much more exact and precise. The basic airbrush setup consists of the airbrush itself, a paint container and an air supply. The air supply is connected to the airbrush with a hose. - Source: Internet
- Are you tired of using a brush and messing with a tray whenever you paint? Consider investing in a paint spray gun. Some of the newer models are a great value and can save you time on your next paint job. But it does take a little practice to learn how to use these tools properly. - Source: Internet
- I also like using an airbrush for priming models because you have more control over where primer goes. An aerosol primer only has an on or off switch. On the other hand, an airbrush lets you control the amount of primer you’re spraying. You do this by adjusting the air pressure and the primer flow mix in the airbrush (more about this below). - Source: Internet
- For priming models, I recommend an air pressure of no more than 25-30 PSI. If you need more air pressure to get your airbrush to work, you are using a primer that is too thick, or your airbrush nozzle is too small. For more information about spraying primer with an airbrush, check out this article. - Source: Internet
- Just like with other products, there are countless airbrushes around to choose from. I’ve put together this buying guide to help you choose the best airbrush for your model painting needs. We will start with a table featuring airbrushes, that I recommend, but below this section, you will find more details about the process of choosing the right airbrush and more details about the airbrushes themselves. - Source: Internet
- The airbrush is equipped with a 9ml (1/3oz) paint cup, that’s non-removable. It’s perhaps slightly too large for most model building needs, but it’s not a big deal. There’s however another version of this brush, which comes with a smaller cup, but that one is maybe too small. I know, I am not easy to please. - Source: Internet
- Almost all cheap airbrushes come with this type of nozzle. But mind you, even some of the most expensive Iwata airbrushes utilize these as well. But of course, they are much better engineered. - Source: Internet
- Airbrushes come in two basic types. An airbrush can either single or double action. The difference lies in the paint delivery mechanism. - Source: Internet
- In the following instructions, we assume that you are already familiar with an airbrush gun and have already gained some experience on paper. Before you start working on your model, you should master the basic exercises such as circles, points, and fine lines. You should also know how your spray pattern changes when you change the distance to the substrate, move your hand quickly or slowly and vary the amount of paint or air. - Source: Internet
- Primer One of the big advantages of an airbrush in miniature wargame army painting is being able to prime your models indoors, no matter the weather outside. The best airbrush primer I have come across is Badger Ultimate (marketed under the less snappy name of Stynylrez in the US), which is available in black, grey and white. Vallejo comes a close second and has a larger range of colour options. - Source: Internet
- Now that you know all of the controls on a spray gun and their basic functions, how do you make them work together to create the perfect spray pattern for the object to be painted? Let’s start with the fluid control knob (1) and the fan control knob (2), which are generally the simplest parts of the set-up procedure. Start with the fluid control knob (1) adjusted to full open, full fluid delivery as previously described. You’ll also want to start with a similar setting for the fan control knob-fully open, full fan. By doing this, you’ve allowed for full fluid delivery and the proper ratio of air to be distributed for proper fan size and atomization. You’ll also want to ensure that you have the proper air pressure and air volume supplied to the spray gun as per manufacturer recommendations. - Source: Internet
- Base coating (or priming) is essential to achieve a good paintwork. It is most often necessary to find imperfections, bad seams, and rough areas that need more sanding. Also, when painting a model in a similar colour as the colour of the plastic, it may be advisable to first prime the model in a different colour. This makes it easier to find spots you may have missed painting. - Source: Internet
- When connected to an air compressor, an airbrush breaks a liquid into tiny droplets. This is called atomization. Atomization produces seamless blends, coatings and gradients a standard paint brush can only dream of. - Source: Internet
- Our recommendation in advance: use good paper for your artwork. There is special airbrush paper from which masking film and stencils can be easily removed and which offers the best properties for airbrush paints to adhere. To practice the techniques you can also use normal copy paper! - Source: Internet
- This airbrush cleaning pot is probably the most essential of the accessories you may want to get. It holds your airbrush, providing a nice rest while you fill it, or do something else. The spray pot also lets you spray to your heart’s content while you clean out the previous color, or simply doing a rinse. The filtered top prevents the over-spray from leaving the pot and getting the mist everywhere else. For $10, it’s probably a no brainer to get this with your airbrush. - Source: Internet
- The best way to create fluffy clouds is with inexpensive and straightforward airbrush stencils. Use the paper of the kitchen roll. You should tear it at will and use it as a stencil. The sides create the great fluffy edges of a cloud. - Source: Internet
- Limitations to Using an Airbrush Although an airbrush may speed up your workflow, in many ways, an airbrush will slow you down, too. Whenever I use my airbrushes for painting miniatures I need to prepare my paint. I have to make sure the paint is thinned to the proper viscosity to flow through the airbrush without clogging. I have to mix these airbrush “cocktails” every time. - Source: Internet
- There are purpose-made thinner additives for paints and primers you can use to make airbrushing easier and less prone to clogging. The only airbrush thinners I recommend and use is Vallejo Airbrush Thinner and Golden Airbrush Medium. Both are affordable, come in huge bottles, and lubricate the internal moving parts of your airbrush. They reduce paint clumping and improve flow through the nozzle. They also atomize well along with paint, so you’ll have a really fine mist you can control. - Source: Internet
- With the three different airbrush guns, which are already included in the set, you can brush both primers and filigree details. The oil-free compressor has a pressure gauge, an air filter, and a pressure regulator. It is very quiet in operation and you can even retrofit it with a larger air tank, which allows you to work noiselessly over a longer period of time. - Source: Internet
- Pro Tip: Acrylic paints often clog the nozzle of the airbrush, which ends up in a splattering effect. To avoid this, flush the airbrush nozzle with water. If you intend to use rubbing alcohol as thinner, try to work in a well-ventilated space. Alcohol-based thinners will form fumes and leave an odor that may be harmful. - Source: Internet
- I’m going to recommend my favorite air compressor for hobby airbrush painters: the Badger Air-Brush Co. TC910 Aspire Pro Compressor. I’m sure there are cheaper knock-offs that will work great, but I’ve never used them. You should avoid compressed air cans. They are not bad for the environment and are unreliable. - Source: Internet
- It comes equipped with a 0.35mm nozzle, which is a flexible enough size for almost all modeling tasks. The fact that it comes with two different paint cups – 2ml and 9ml – is a nice bonus. - Source: Internet
- Usually caused by having too low air pressure from the compressor. When using air-cans to drive an airbrush, sputtering is almost impossible to avoid, since the cans lose their pressure very quickly. Before you know it, the airbrush will start to spit large gobs of paint on your model. Don’t say that I didn’t warn you about air-cans! - Source: Internet
- It is possible to use Vallejo paints with an airbrush. They have formulas that were specifically designed to be used with an airbrush, or you can dilute some paint colors. There are two paints by Vallejo that have been specifically designed for use with airbrush. These are called Model Air and Premium. - Source: Internet
- Most air compressors come with a spray gun attachment. This is a great tool to have if you need to do any painting or other light work around the house. Here is a step by step guide on how to use your air compressor’s spray gun: - Source: Internet
- Gravity-fed airbrushes feature a paint cup that’s sitting at the top of the airbrush’s body. The paint flows into the mixing chamber freely thanks to gravity. The paint cups can vary in size and some airbrushes even allow you to change the cups based on your current needs. Other airbrushes have fixed paint cups. - Source: Internet
- These airbrushes have a special trigger that you push down to start the airflow and pull back to start the paint flow. This solution is much more flexible allowing you to precisely control the amount of paint being delivered. A double-action airbrush is especially useful when extreme precision is needed such as when doing soft camouflage transitions or the classic Luftwaffe mottling on an aircraft model. It’s also worth noting that the double-action mechanism takes a bit more time to fully master. - Source: Internet
- You can do many things with an airbrush, from painting a model outright to applying weathering to a painted piece. While we usually associate it with locomotives and cars, you can use your airbrush on all parts of your model railroad. Structures, track, and scenery can all be painted or detailed with an airbrush. - Source: Internet
- A pro tip for using Vallejo Surface Primer is to shake the bottle well before use, and try airbrushing the primer without thinning it. Only thin this primer with a little water or Vallejo airbrush thinner. For a bit of fun, you can mix another colored primer (like my favorite color) with Vallejo surface primer to change the overall tone of your foundation coat. - Multiple thin coats always yield better results than a single thick coat. Because the paint application with an airbrush is so thin, a coat will dry much faster than when brush painting. You won’t have to wait long, if at all, between coats. - Source: Internet
- The poor machining of the front end components and the use of the O-ring under the nozzle are things that I consider serious shortcomings. This is the most critical area of an airbrush as far as performance is concerned. If they had done a better job here I would much happier with it. - Source: Internet
- If the substrate is significantly darker than the colour to be applied, a primer is necessary. But a primer can also be used to make the airbrush colours adhere better to the substrate. These special primer paints are available in white, grey and black. - Source: Internet
- When painting a model with more than one colour, it may be difficult to obtain a good and clean line between the colours. Sometimes you want a sharp demarcation line between the two colours, and sometimes you want them to “blend” or fade into each other. Military camouflage paint schemes have seldom sharp paint edges, but more often display “feathered” edges or some kind of “mottling”. - Source: Internet
- A spray booth to airbrush miniatures is an great tool for painting indoors efficiently and safely. The ventilation fan combined with an air filter keeps the contaminated air from spilling into your room. Most spray booths come with a built-in light source to make it easy to see the miniature while you are painting. - Cleaning the Airbrush is a tricky and careful task. The performance of airbrushes heavily depends on the proper cleaning of Equipment. Paints have sticky materials that can clog the nozzles. Here are some tips for cleaning an airbrush - Source: Internet
- We also offer models that use a trigger style similar to what you would find on a spray gun. People who are used to spray guns might prefer this style. It is also favored by those with arthritis or who have difficulty using the most usual lever. Trigger style airbrushes like the HP-TH and Neo TRN1 are dual action. - Source: Internet
- : Check for dry paint in the brush. If you find any, spray the appropriate cleaning agent or thinner through the airbrush with reasonable frequency. Step 3: Back flush the airbrush by pinching the nozzle of the airbrush with a small rag or paper to stop the airflow. It will deflect the air back into the airbrush chamber and loosen any dried material, sending it into the cleaning bottle. - Source: Internet
- On the other hand, single-action airbrushes have significant disadvantages that make them less favorable for painting miniatures. Single-action airbrushes rely on using air volume to control paint volume. This gives you less control over the air-paint mixture, and leads to more coarse spraying. This is okay on large surfaces, like terrain pieces, but could be problematic on small models. - Source: Internet
- Primer paint is relatively aggressive and eats into the surface. With metals, this creates a good basis for the airbrushed paint. But with models made of plastic, this can sometimes be a problem due to the rough surface. Since the primer layer is an additional filling, the smallest details of the model could disappear. - Source: Internet
- I love using my spray booth for priming and painting miniatures because it’s so easy to use and doesn’t require much maintenance. In fact, it’s one of the lowest maintenance tools I have for the hobby, right next to the venerated hair dryer. Do you use a spray booth? Does it cause you any problems? If you have any feedback about this article or questions about using your spray booth, let me know with a comment below. Happy airbrushing (in your spray booth)! - Source: Internet
- The worst thing is that air cans are only capable of delivering enough pressure to pull the paint through the brush for a very short time. You will only be able to paint for around half a minute before the air can cool off and stops delivering power to the brush. You will now have to wait for like five to ten minutes before you can use the airbrush again. - Source: Internet
- Ensure that the workplace is free from dust and fuzz, as these can settle on the still-wet paint. Step 4: Get a daylight lamp for good lighting. The same goes for right-handed people. - Source: Internet
- Before painting, make sure that the parts are very clean. Even the slightest residue of sanding dust will leave ugly bumps and lumps when painted. Always remove all dust and handling grease by washing the model under running water, and then let the model dry for a day before painting. - Source: Internet
- Some model builders use a compressed air bottle to operate their airbrush guns. This is possible, but also less economical, as these bottles are quite expensive and empty quickly. The cost of buying a compressor is often recovered already after the 3rd model you have worked on. - Source: Internet
- This consists of a very thick, special cardboard. The masking film can also be easily removed from this special paper. Normal drawing paper is unfortunately all too often destroyed by the foil. Since airbrush paper is relatively expensive, we recommend using normal drawing paper for practice. For your real work of art, you should use it to get an excellent result. - Source: Internet
- Use a rag or tissue paper to wipe out the remaining paint Half-fill the airbrush with thinner. Shake and blow the thinner through your airbrush until there are no visible paint particles. - An airbrush gun is one the most important tool in this technique. It is used to spray the paint. The distinct feature of the airbrush gun is that its working principle is the same but has different operational features. Based on handling, it is further divided into two types. - Source: Internet
- Most model builders start by painting the frames by hand. I still like to do it on models where the edges of the frames are represented by thin raised lines. By using these lines as guides, it is possible to paint very fine and accurate panels using a fine brush, thin paint and some patience. - Source: Internet
- Allow the area to dry completely. This may take two to three days for oil paints. Step 5: Add two layers of titanium white when dry. Let them dry and begin the airbrushing technique again. - Source: Internet
- There is no restriction on the choice of paint. For airbrushing, you can use any paint. It can be acrylics, watercolor, food color, enamel paint, and automotive. More sticky and adhesive paints can be thinned by mixing thinner in the paint. - Source: Internet
- A different technique to recreate the look of an unpainted metal surface is the use of bare metal-foil. With this approach, the metal look of the model is achieved by “wrapping” the parts with a self-adhesive metallic foil. While some model builders swear by the bare-metal foil technique, I have so far never succeeded with this method and I don’t think that I will ever try again. - Source: Internet

- Sooner or later, however, the purchase of a specialized airbrush compressor is worthwhile. This has some advantages over the DIY store version in terms of volume and size. In addition, an airbrush compressor has a few things that are missing from the usual DIY compressor. We consider a water separator, pressure regulator, and an air tank to be very useful to ensure trouble-free airbrush work. - Source: Internet
- A suction device is a system that is only open at the front. At the rear, there is the extraction unit with a filter and in the middle, there is a turntable. This allows you to spray your object all around while the fine spray mist is sucked away. On the one hand, this prevents the paint mist from being inhaled and on the other hand, it allows you to work without leaving any traces of spray mist on the object. Extraction systems are especially popular with model makers. - Source: Internet
- You will also find a cutout on the handle that allows you to quickly grab the nut holding the needle and pull it back to unclog the nozzle. Honestly, I don’t use this feature at all because the lacquer paints I am using never cause any clogging or tip dry issues. I also find the sharp edge of the cutout unpleasant when I am using the airbrush for more than an hour. This is probably the only thing I don’t like about the Infinity. - Source: Internet
- Reasons why the Badger Air-Brush Co. TC910 Aspire Pro is my recommended airbrush compressor: Integrated air-tank (removes moisture in your air line) In-line moisture trap (this is very important) Quiet motor operation (mostly) Maintenance-free for many years (nearly 10 for me) Automatic on-off switch (e.g., keeps air tank pressure above your needed amount) Portable construction Priced fairly online - Source: Internet

- Hose & Adapter One thing that deserves a mention is a hose to connect your airbrush to the compressor, because you won’t get very far without it! Most compressors will come with one – just make sure when you make your purchase. You should also check the thread size of the hose connector corresponds to that of the airbrush valve screw as this can vary between manufacturers. If they are different – don’t worry, adapters are readily available online or from most hardware stores. - Source: Internet

- Just to reiterate – this is my no means an exhaustive list of the options available to you when it comes to airbrushes. These are just the ones I have used, and of these, the Badger airbrushes are my favourite. They may not be as aesthetically pleasing as the others, or as precisely engineered – but they just work. At the end of the day, the best tools are the ones you don’t really notice because they’re busy doing their job and not requiring your attention. That way you can get on with your job, getting your army painted, getting creative with effects and techniques, and generally having a great time in the hobby! - Source: Internet

- Can Airbrushing Improve Your Miniature Painting? I think if you invest in an airbrush, you’ll find your miniature painting will improve in many different ways, because you’ll be painting more. The biggest discovery I made from my early days with an airbrush was that I could do almost everything I wanted with a basic, budget airbrush. It was only when I needed more reliability and finer precision that I invested in the higher end airbrushes. For a great video that inspired me to start using an airbrush for painting miniatures, check out this video of an artist using the Harder & Steenbeck Infinity 2-in-1 airbrush. - Source: Internet

- If you want to use Vallejo Model Color in an airbrush, you need to make sure you have the proper consistency first. It is a rule of thumb to thin the paint to around the consistency of skim milk. It is hard to find the perfect consistency because all paints are different, so it is a trial and error. - Source: Internet
- This happens to everyone while using an airbrush – suddenly the paint finish looks coarse and bumpy, just like the peel of an orange. This is usually caused by airbrushing with too low air pressure or brushing too far away from the surface. The reason for this effect is that the microscopic paint particles dry up a little bit and gather in tiny droplets while flying through the air onto the model surface. - Source: Internet
- The best way to find the right colours to use is really to use your own references. Look in aviation and modelling magazines. Search for photos on the Internet and compare several different models of the same aircraft. Finally go for your instincts – quite often what seems right is correct! - Source: Internet
- When you are planning on using Vallejo paints with an airbrush, you will need to thin it even if it is designed to be used with an airbrush. Vallejo Model Air will take less paint thinner than Vallejo Model Color. For Model Color, a 3:1 ratio of thinner to paint is recommended for the right consistency. Model Air only needs a tiny bit of thinner to properly perform. - Source: Internet
- I recommend using this primer for airbrushing large models and pieces and only with a higher air pressure (around 25-35 PSI). To avoid clogging, you should also only use airbrush nozzle sizes of 0.3mm or larger. You can certainly thin this primer using water or artist-grade airbrush thinner to help atomize the flow mixture. - Source: Internet
- The CRPlus moniker marks the lines of H&S airbrushes that sport the new chrome-plated finish. This makes them a bit more expensive than the older versions. However, the new finish is more resistant to thinners, airbrush cleaners, and aggressive human sweat. The older nickel finish would often rub off after some years, revealing the bare brass underneath. If you don’t care about the looks of the airbrush, the older cheaper version might still be available from some vendors. - Source: Internet
- To maintain a spray booth filter, it’s good to know how the air filter works. Most airbrush spray booths comes with two-stage filters, which have a coarse (blue) and fine filter material (white). The coarse filter captures larger debris and pigments, and the fine material traps the residual dust and smaller particles that get through the first stage, before the air leaves the booth exhaust system. - Source: Internet
- As you may notice, these jobs for airbrushes are for applying paint over fairly large surfaces. Advanced painting techniques with an airbrush involves more skill from the painter. More advanced techniques with an airbrush for painting miniatures include: zenithal highlighting, sketch-style painting, and non-metallic metal (NMM) techniques. - Source: Internet

- Besides these details, noise development is an essential factor that you should pay attention to. Up to 50 dB, we find the noise to be pleasant. That’s why you should choose a model in this range or even lower. - Source: Internet
- When using an airbrush, think of the paint as sunlight falling onto your model. Masked off areas are shadows, and exposed areas are exposed to the light. Masking can be done by using self-adhesive tape, frisket paper or just ordinary paper cut and held in front of the area to be masked off. There are also different masking fluids (like Maskol) that can be brushed on and after the painting simply removed. I have had some rather bad previous experiences with Maskol discolouring the paintwork underneath, and I cannot, therefore, recommend it. - Source: Internet
- The cavity at the bottom of the bowl that you see to the right is larger than the cut-out above it. So there is a ledge all the way around, and you can’t touch the under side of it with a brush. The newer design airbrushes with a tapered cup have better access for cleaning. - Source: Internet
- When airbrushing, it is necessary to be able to adjust the pressure precisely within a narrow range between 1.5 and 3 bar. For this, you need a pressure regulator and a pressure gauge. The latter shows you exactly the pressure you are using. A nice spray pattern can only be achieved if the pressure can be adjusted in detail. - Source: Internet
- Although a double-action airbrush has more moving parts and a complex trigger operation, with time you can learn how to make the use of a double-action airbrush routine. Indeed, a double-action airbrush is also a bit more expensive than single-action airbrushes. But, the advantages easily make up for this and the rewards in your miniature paintings will be worth the investment in a double-action airbrush. - Source: Internet
- Furthermore, guns and some primary colors are included. Also included should be a suitable airbrush hose and, at best, a cleaning fluid. Then the basic airbrush sets are actually already complete. - Source: Internet

It works great in an airbrush or applied with a regular brush. You can see how to use this primer on miniatures in this full review and guide. - Source: Internet
- With the Single Action, the lever only serves to regulate the airflow. The amount of ink is fixed by means of a rotary wheel. This action is quite easy to use and quick to learn but unfortunately, it is not suitable for detailed work, fine gradients, and effects. An airbrush gun with a single-action suction cup is ideal for primers. With a Double Action Airbrush Gun with a flow cup system, you can create lifelike artwork with fine details and realistic effects. - Source: Internet
- An air compressor is a vital component used to create pressurized air for airbrushing. But, it is something you can do without. All you need do is create a DIY compressed air can yourself or get one for less than $10 at a local hobby store near you. - Source: Internet
- Regardless, paint layering when airbrushing should have a relative thickness between 35 to 60 Centipoise. This thickness is ideal for an airbrush with a .2mm or .18mm nozzle size. - Source: Internet
- Important: CO2 cylinders are not an option for the operation of an airbrush gun. Carbon dioxide displaces the oxygen in the lungs. Because it is heavier than air, it collects near the ground and poses a real danger to children, pets and the artist himself/herself. Ventilation of the workshop is of limited help. Therefore it is better to steer clear of CO2 cylinders. - Source: Internet
- In addition, large areas can be quickly covered with paint. The paint is applied particularly thinly and evenly. The airbrush technique can be used on almost all surfaces. From paper, metal, and plastic to textiles, skin, and food - every surface can be decorated with an airbrush. Airbrushes, therefore, can be used in almost all areas of art. - Source: Internet
- Even using a cheap airbrush will result in a much better finish than you’d ever be able to achieve with a paintbrush. Of course, there are some downsides as well and obviously, the airbrush will require further investments, because it will not work without a compressor. Technically you could use bottles of compressed air, but a compressor is a better long-time solution. - Source: Internet

- How to Thin Airbrush Primer for Miniatures? The best airbrush thinner is pure water for thinning primer for use in an airbrush. This is because all surface primers for miniatures and scale models are water-soluble. To thin a primer, my recommendation is to mix the primer with a little water in a separate dish or palette before loading it into your airbrush. I use an eyedropper to transfer my thinned primer to the paint cup of an gravity-feed airbrush. - Source: Internet
- Many beginners are unsure what pressure to use when airbrushing miniatures. As a general rule, for the type and thinness of paint we use, 20psi is a good starting point. You will likely only need to deviate from this in exceptional circumstances, for example if you experience plaint splatter (common with pale / light / white paint), increase the pressure to 25 or 30psi to increase atomisation. - Source: Internet
- This type of airbrush is controlled pretty much the same way as the traditional spray gun. As the name suggests, you hold it like a pistol and the trigger controls both the airflow and paint flow. Pull the trigger further back to release more paint. Simple as that. The pistol grip airbrushes are very comfortable to use and could be an interesting choice for beginners looking to cover wide areas quickly. - Source: Internet

If you are right-handed, place the lamp on the right to avoid shadows as you spray paint. The same goes for right-handed people. Step 5: Arrange tools and protective gear closely. - Source: Internet
- Some airbrushes have an adjustable control at the back for limiting how far the trigger can be pulled, and therefore how much paint will be released. This can be a useful feature for beginners as a way of ensuring you don’t accidentally flood the model, but will become less important over time as you become more experienced and get a feel for the controls of your airbrush. You can see an example of this control on the Iwata Custom Micron B pictured above. - Source: Internet
- If you need a compressor in addition to the airbrush gun, we recommend the 11-piece airbrush set from Vivohome. The set is extremely affordable and you get a good compressor in addition to the highly processed airbrush gun. The handy, light, and powerful compressor and the very good spray pattern of the airbrush gun make this set especially suitable for model making. - Source: Internet
- You can recycle air filters (see details above). But, even these two stage filters require replacement after they get clogged up with too much paint and debris. Your spray booth will work better and keep your local air safer to breath with clean filters. Similar to how the air filter on your car needs replacement after a while, so too does the filter on your spray booth. - Source: Internet
- clean the Airbrush after the application of each color before using another color purchase airbrush cleaning solution from any paint store and clean the cup of Airbrush with that solution. If there exist stubborn stains like cake fat and residue of lacquer paint, firstly scratch those parts and clean them with the soaked cotton swab. Now put your finger on the nozzle and apply backward pressure on the Cleaning solution of the airbrush cup. At this point, ensure that your Airbrush is well connected to the Compressor. Continue this practice until the color of the solution becomes transparent. - Source: Internet

The overall finish will have the biggest impact on the appearance of a build. So, we should make it the best we can. There are steps that I like to follow in order to ensure a nice paint job. - Source: Internet
- Other manufacturers refer to the exact colour nuance using a standardized colour description (such as the FS-designation). But even if you’re using the exact colour, your model may still appear “wrong”. Quite often the colours seem too dark or having too much contrast. The reason for this is the scale effect on colours. - Source: Internet
- Sure there are airbrush-ready model paints, thinned to the consistency for clog-free airbrushing, but they are also a hassle. Sometimes I want to paint with a specific color to match another paint on the model. Airbrush-ready paints have limited colors, and some of the color-matched game model brands, e.g., Citadel Air, are expensive! - Source: Internet
- Iwata HP-C Plus This is a solid ‘middle-weight’ choice being average in terms of price, but very high quality in terms of engineering and design. It has a 0.3mm needle which is bang in the middle of the recommended range and a stop mechanism at the back. One word of warning with this airbrush is that the nozzle is threaded and very small, and it is possible to break it if you’re not careful. I am ahem speaking from experience here, and replacement parts for this airbrush are not cheap. - Source: Internet
- This is an attachment that fits between your airbrush and the air-line hose. It is an air regulator (controlled by a twist knob) that allows you to adjust the air pressure heading directly into your airbrush. This is a huge convenience so you don’t need adjust the air regulator on your compressor (which tend to be clunky, awkward affairs), which may be located farther from your working surface. - Source: Internet
- Here’s how an airbrush atomizes paint: Pressurized air flows through the airbrush and creates a vacuum that sucks paint from a reservoir, e.g., a bottle or attached paint cup - Source: Internet
- Think of the following: if you are looking at a model in scale 1/72 from a distance of one foot, then it should be like looking at the real aircraft from 72 feet Now, 72 feet of air is not quite transparent – it has a certain amount of “haziness” or “blueness”. To simulate this effect, your colours should be “toned down” somewhat (a small amount of white mixed in) to give the correct appearance. Some brands of paint (such as the AeroMaster WarBird-series) already have this “toning down” effect built in – they are actually a shade lighter than what’s printed on the paint jar. - Source: Internet
- Whether you apply the paint in light coats or not, it’s best to use 15-20 PSI and hold the airbrush 4-7 inches (10-18 cm) from your model surface. Distances further than this will cause the paint to dry quickly. If you’re too close it will run. - Source: Internet
- As soon as you are finished with your airbrush work, you can hang the model parts on a chemical stand to dry. Bend simple hooks from thin wire for this. These often leave only tiny colorless spots, which are usually hardly visible. - Source: Internet
- One of the best ways to prime your miniatures and models is with an airbrush. Spraying a primer helps you apply even and smooth coats that make painting more enjoyable. Learning how to prime your miniatures with an airbrush will save you precious time and money. Applying primer with an airbrush can even improve the quality of your miniature and model painting. - Source: Internet
- Bit of an obvious one but you’re not going to get very far aibrushing without any paint! Acrylic paint is the most commonly used in miniature paiting and pretty much any acrylic paint can be used in an airbrush provided it is adequately thinned with water (or acrtylic medium if significant thinning is necessary). There are also acrylic paint ranges designed specifically for airbrushing that can be used undiluted. Vallejo Model Air is one such range with a vast amount of colour choices. Citadel also have an Air range and many other brands such as Badger and Tamiya also produce such paints. - Source: Internet
- Disassemble the airbrush Soak the needle and head in thinner overnight. Do not stand the needle on its point because doing so might cause it to bend. Use a rag to clean the paints on the needle. Let it dry before reassembling. - Source: Internet

- I’ve owned and operated a side-cup airbrush for many years as a miniature painter. A note to point out with a side-feed airbrush is that you often need to fill the cup with enough paint to allow the feed to work. In other words, there is a minimum amount of paint you need to use in a side-feed airbrush. This means you end up wasting paint if you only need to paint a small amount with the airbrush. - Source: Internet
- From this point onward, I slowly collected more than 15 airbrushes of different makes and models. Although each airbrush has a unique function and feel, they all work the same when painting miniatures. What airbrush you choose to use for your work will depend on your personal preference and how much time you’re willing to learn the tool. - Source: Internet
- Over time, I got better at controlling my airbrush and was soon painting actual game miniatures. I painted Warhammer 40k models with my airbrush. As with many miniature painters, I started using an airbrush for large pieces and basecoating the first layers of primer and paint. Then, with practice I got better and pushed the limits of the airbrush for miniatures. - Source: Internet
- Many modelers may choose not to airbrush the inner sides. But, the fact is that your model might have certain hard-to-reach areas where even the brush cannot penetrate. With an airbrush, you can easily coat these parts to get fine results since the paints reach all parts of your model. - Source: Internet
- In summary, the beautiful work you see on social media has helped to propel airbrushes to the forefront as a legitimate and useful tool for painting miniatures. In fact, I don’t think you’ll find many serious painters accusing airbrushing as a cheating technique. To really maximize the utility of an airbrush, you’ll have to spend a lot of time practicing your skill with balancing your air pressure, paint thickness, and fine-motor control of the airbrush. More about this below! - Source: Internet

- If you don’t care about the Quick Fix handle, the H&S Evolution airbrush might be a good alternative to the Infinity, that’s also quite a bit cheaper. The Evolution shares many of its components, such as the nozzle or needle, with the Infinity. Its performance is also pretty much the same. - Source: Internet
- As soon as you are finished with your work, you should disassemble your airbrush gun and clean it thoroughly. When changing the color it is sufficient to blow through the airbrush gun several times with water or Airbrush Cleaner. Ensure that all water or cleaner is removed from the gun before filling with new paint. Spray it until there’s nothing but air left in your gun. - Source: Internet
- Airbrushing is so popular because it is versatile in its operation and can be used domestically, industrially, in food art, and other fields of life. With the help of airbrushing technique, you can produce different color patterns and transitions in shades. Airbrushing helps you create imaginable art and interesting and unique effects in your painting. - Source: Internet
- 1899 - Olaus Wold, leaves Thayer & Chandler and founds the Wold Airbrush Company. 1904 - Jens Paasche, a former employee of Wold and Thayer & Chandler, creates the Paasche Airbrush Company. - Another alternatives to spraying a primer with an airbrush or using an aerosol primer is to use a thinned coat of gesso. Gesso is a traditional compound artists use for priming canvas and other surfaces in preparation for acrylic and oil paint. Most gesso come in thick pastes that you’ll need to thin with water if you’re using it on models. - Source: Internet
- Cleaning Fluid Most brands that offer airbrush paints also sell a corresponding cleaning fluid. Buying branded cleaning fluid can get expensive however, when it’s something you will need to use frequently. Isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) can be used as a low cost, widely available alternative cleaning fluid for acrylic paint. If you’re using enamel (oil-based) paint in your airbrush you will need odourless thinner / mineral spirits to clean up. - Source: Internet
- Start by cleaning out the pot or jar holding the paint. Some airbrushes are designed to feed out of a standard paint bottle. If you have one of these, you can often just unscrew the bottle and replace the lid. This is great for common colors that you can premix or thin and save for multiple projects. - Source: Internet
- On more advanced airbrushes, the trigger can not only be moved down and up, but also backwards and forwards. This action of the trigger controls the amount of paint in the air/paint mixture. Such airbrushes are called double-action airbrushes and generally allow a far better control of the painting than single-action airbrushes. - Source: Internet
- For miniatures or models, an airbrush is a power tool. An airbrush acts like a large paint brush you can use on miniatures. I learned with some practice that an airbrush can also give me a lot of control over the smoothness of my color blends. I can blend and layer paints quickly and easily with an airbrush. Although, there are limitations to this, as I share with you below. - Source: Internet
- Pull back the trigger slightly for a little bit of paint and pull back farther to release more paint. Dual action airbrushes give you much better control and can create more dynamic spray patterns. Nearly all Iwata airbrushes are dual action airbrushes. - Source: Internet
- Single Action airbrushes have independent controls for air and paint. The trigger only controls air. A dial on the handle sets how much paint is will be released when the trigger is pressed. - Source: Internet
- Many paint labels will often classify the paints as airbrush paint, but it does not mean you can use the paint straight from the can. Paints used in an airbrush require thinning to sit properly on your model. If you use the thick airbrush paint without thinning it you risk clogging and overworking the airbrush. The spray pattern will also be inconsistent, giving you a poor finish. - Source: Internet
- There is a learning curve for both types, but double action brushes generally provide better control and results. This is especially true when wreathing models where you don’t always want the same even paint coat. For many basic jobs, however, the simplicity of a single action airbrush offers an advantage. - Source: Internet
- The water separator is packed with an airbrush compressor. It is used to collect water during compression. It stops the outflow of water in compressed air to make the spraying pattern charming and real. - Source: Internet
- Put the airbrush in your chosen hand Let your index finger rest gently on the button or trigger. How you position your finger depends on the brush type you use. Wrap the air hose around your wrist to prevent the brush from falling from your hand when you begin. - Source: Internet
- When you are painting the major parts of the model, such as the fuselage and the wings, remember to paint every detail that is going to be attached to these surfaces. Paint all the airbrakes, flaps, slots and landing gear bay doors at the same time or you may find it very difficult if not impossible to obtain the same colour nuance and paint glossiness later. Glue these parts in place at least temporarily with blue-tak or a droplet of white glue before masking and painting. I cannot tell you how annoying it is to discover having forgotten painting airbrakes or wing flaps and ending up with slightly different coloured parts. - Source: Internet
- Depending on your preference, you can apply colors intensively or discreetly with the airbrush. However, the most significant effect is the spraying of entire color gradients. And you will encounter these everywhere in nature. - Source: Internet
- This is a 4-piece set of filters, and much less expensive than buying single filters at a time. I find I need to replace filters every 2-3 months and I airbrush quite frequently in my spray booth. So, this set should last you at least a 6-12 months or longer depending on your miniature painting habits and overall use of the spray booth. - Source: Internet
- Similar to a bottom-feed airbrush, a side-feed airbrush uses a suction action to pull paint into the airflow. However, instead of using a tube or straw inserted into a bottle, paint is feed in a cup attached to the side of the airbrush. Paint is “sucked” into the airbrush from the side. - Source: Internet
- As with the airbrush itself, there are many options when it comes to compressors, and a broad range of prices. But, also like the airbrush, you don’t need to spend a lot to get what you need. In fact, this is even more true with the compressor as it’s not such a precision tool – it’s really quite a simple piece of equipment and an airbrush won’t tax the capabilities of even the simplest of models. - Source: Internet
- Airbrushing is a quick and easy way to paint and cover surfaces efficiently. Before you use any kind of paint with an airbrush, it will be beneficial to thin it. If you don’t thin paint before using it for an airbrush, it can clog the nozzle and you will spend more time cleaning it than you would actually painting. - Source: Internet
- Unfortunately, paint spray does not only adhere to the object to be sprayed, but also to everything else in the vicinity. Therefore, you should clear your workplace of everything that should not get painted. It is best to line the work surface generously with newspapers or the like. There are also special spray boxes for model making, which make the tedious covering work easier for you. - Source: Internet

- When choosing an airbrush, you should consider several factors. Some of them are very important, others less so. Let’s have look at them now. - Source: Internet
- You can change the nozzle by loosening the screw connection. Then you can unscrew the nozzle and pull the needle out of the airbrush. You can put the new nozzle and the needle back in the same way. A cleaning set and an airbrush cleaner are not included in the package and should be purchased separately. The entire Iwata Eclipse HP CS can be easily disassembled for thorough cleaning. - Source: Internet
- Most hobby spray booths include a turn table for placing your model on while you paint them. I recommend this useful turntable because it’s elevated. This raises your model so you can spray more of its surface easier from the floor of the spray booth. - Source: Internet
- Good lighting is particularly important for the fine work in model making. A daylight lamp helps you to distinguish fine color nuances and to create your model realistically. To avoid shadows being cast, right-handed people should place the lighting on the left and left-handed people on the right. - Source: Internet
- Sometimes finding the correct colour to use for a part or for the whole model can be quite a tricky business. Most model kit manufacturers provide a painting guide, but more often than not, this guide is not quite correct. Sometimes the manufacturer refers to a certain brand of paint (such as Humbrol), while the real colours fall “in between” two given colours. - Source: Internet
- In general, paint is injected at right angles to the model. The paint application should only be thin, so try to adjust the amount of paint to a minimum. Start with the corners and edges and only when they are finished should you spray the larger surfaces. - Source: Internet
- This is a larger version of the turntable that comes with most spray booths. It can hold up to 65lb (or ~30 kg), so you can even use it to hold large models, terrain pieces or other projects. The base has rubber feet so you can be sure it won’t slip on the spray booth floor. - Source: Internet
- Masking tape or a liquid masking film is used to cover small areas. Masking tape is a type of self-adhesive tape. You trace the shape of the part to be covered onto the tape, cut it out and stick it onto the model. Masking tape is only suitable for straight surfaces, as it must lie firmly on the edges, otherwise paint can get under the film. Carefully remove the masking tape immediately after spraying to avoid smearing of the paint and frayed edges. - Source: Internet
- A single-action airbrush is simple. You only push the trigger in a single direction to control air flow. To add paint to your spray, you don’t do anything except activate the airbrush air flow. In a single-action airbrush, paint is mixed with air, passively. Because single-action airbrushes are simple, they are easier to maintain and generally less expensive than double-action airbrushes (below). - Source: Internet
- Normally Paints have an adhesive property that clogs the air gun. Due to clogging, paint flow is disrupted, and unintentional patterns of color may appear on the painting surface. So, the air gun must be clean and unclogged after the first color change. Also, the user must have a cotton swab or tissue paper while airbrushing to clean the air gun repeatedly. - Source: Internet
- Maintenance and Care Guide for Your Spray Booth Here’s a bit more info about how to keep your spray booth working for years into the future. A good spray booth is a low maintenance system. There is also a Troubleshooting section at the end dealing with some of the common problems you may encounter and how to resolve them. - Source: Internet
- This is another popular airbrush that’s also rather inexpensive with its price being set around the 100 dollars mark. The double-action airbrush comes equipped with a 0.35mm nozzle, which makes it a flexible tool for spraying models. - Source: Internet
- The body of the airbrush is a hollow tube. When you press down the trigger on the brush, air will start to flow through the body of the airbrush. When you release the trigger, the airflow will stop. The harder you press the trigger, the more air will flow through the airbrush. - Source: Internet
- Step #1 – Secure your model Attach your model to a painting handle or holder to make airbrushing easier. Place your model in a holder or stable platform. You can use any of these painting handles or third helping hand clips. These soldering clips and flexible arm stands are helpful for airbrushing miniatures and other sub-assemblies. - Source: Internet
- Spray booths come in a variety of sizes and prices. A small, inexpensive and portable booth may be all you need. Do spend a few extra dollars however and get one which will properly filter and vent the fumes. - Source: Internet
- Maintain an even distance from the model. Too far back and the paint won’t make it or may be dry before it hits the model. (This is especially true with fast-drying acrylics.) Too close and the paint can run. - Source: Internet
- Otherwise, there are differences in that the paint is poured into the top of an internal funnel or into a lateral container. A lateral container has the advantage that you can accommodate more color. Some airbrushers also find it disadvantageous because it could sometimes obstruct the view. - Source: Internet
- Pro Tip: If the above process seems too rigorous, try disassembling the airbrush before cleaning. For this process, you only need to clean parts that come in contact with the sprayed material, which are the nozzle and needle. Use an ultrasonic cleaner or denture cleaner to clean the nozzle. Soft rags soaked in water will easily clean the needle. - Source: Internet
- As you’ve just seen, you don’t have to do all the work with an airbrush. Sometimes a fine brush is enough to paint eyelash hairs much better and easier. Photorealists, in particular, will often use a mixed technique to get the reality and such fine lines down. Then they will also just take the hard pencil to hand. - Source: Internet
- Both Badger Stynylrez and Vallejo Surface Primers work great on small miniatures and large model terrain pieces or vehicles. Use multiple thin coats to avoid applying primer on your model too thick. Thin layers of primer will help you retain surface detail on your miniatures. - Source: Internet

- Almost all beginners decide to brush-paint their first models. With a carefully prepared surface, a good set of brushes, properly thinned paint, some decent craftsmanship and a ton of patience, truly amazing results can be achieved. But for the best results, you should really use an airbrush. - Source: Internet
- The main rule is, the larger the beads, the higher the mask will hover above the surface – the more “fuzzy” the paint edge will be. Smaller beads, closer mask – sharper paint edge. Of course, you will have to airbrush from straight angles to the mask, or you will spray paint under the mask. - Source: Internet
- Leave one sidelight and spray the shaded side dark depending on the light. It is best to start at a higher distance. Then work your way to the dark shadow by holding the airbrush lower. - Source: Internet
- Using Vallejo paints in an airbrush is super easy and doesn’t take much effort. You just need to thin the paint with an airbrush thinner, flow improver, or even water. The proper consistency will be similar to that of skim milk. The amount of thinner that needs to be added will depend on the thickness of the paint and can vary by color and brand. - Source: Internet
- Pro tip: Always press down the trigger to adjust air pressure before pulling. Also triggering air first helps you clean out debris in the airbrush. The wrong technique could cause clogs in your double-action airbrush. To prevent this, release the trigger while leaving the air on. This stops paints from building up in the needle. - Source: Internet
- The Patriot 105 is inexpensive, but is most reliable airbrush for painting a large number of models. When I was painting swarms of tyranids on commission, the most useful airbrush I had was the Badger Patriot 105. The Badger Patriot 105 airbrush does not clog much with a 0.5mm nozzle. You can get smaller nozzles for fine or ultra fine detail airbrushing. - Source: Internet
- Maintain a “wet edge” when painting. Overlap your strokes slightly and work evenly across a model from one end to the other. This blends the strokes for an even finish. - Source: Internet
- A gravity-feed airbrush is the best airbrush for painting miniatures. In gravity-feed airbrush, the paint is fed through a cup located on the top of the airbrush. This allows gravity to pull the paint into the airbrush when you open the valve. As a result, you can operate a gravity feed airbrush at much lower air pressure (often less than 30 PSI). In fact, the only limitation of a double-action airbrush is the viscosity of the paint and nozzle size (measured in millimeters for the opening diameter). - Source: Internet
- The ideal pressure for the ideal air compressor to paint furniture is 12 to 25PSI. You can determine exactly how much pressure is exerted by following the user’s instructions. The difference between the brands of spray is huge. - Source: Internet
- The Model G22 Airbrush is made with high quality precision components that enable it to work efficiently while providing exceptional atomization and accurate spray control. The solvent resistant PTFE needle packing prolongs the airbrushes life. It enables you to use of solvent based automotive paints: urethane’s, lacquers and enamels. Removing the needle & nozzle caps enable you to spray the full range of texture & stippling effects. Rebuild kits and replacement needle/nozzle sets are available for this airbrush. - Source: Internet
- Lubricating Oil After cleaning your airbrush with any solvents, it’s a good idea to apply a small amount of lubricating fluid to the moving parts (the needle, trigger and occasionally a small amount on any threaded areas) – to make sure everything stays smooth. I have tried several products that claim to be designed for this purpose, but I find they often have the opposite effect and end up gumming things up. The best lubricant I’ve found for this purpose is sewing machine oil, which is thin and clear in colour. A small bottle will last a very long time. - Source: Internet
- A different and easy technique is to use empty decal sheets (decal sheets without anything pre-printed). These decal sheets can be airbrushed with the desired colour, cut in thin strips and attached to the canopies just like regular decals. The result is most often very nice and neat! - Source: Internet
- With the liquid masking film, you can protect windscreens, windows, and all other parts of your model that are not completely flat. You apply the masking film relatively thickly with a brush. As soon as it is dry, it will appear transparent and you can start airbrushing. Once the airbrush paint is dry, you can remove the masking film layer with tweezers. - Source: Internet
- But unless you’re extremely hard on yourself, things are not so bad, though. There are many metallic acrylics and enamels, which can be painted on using normal methods and will create a fairly believable representation of a metal finish. Keep in mind that a good priming with white or light grey is more essential than ever because metallic colours are transparent. An unprimed surface will show through no matter how many layers of metallic paint you paint on. - Source: Internet
- Vallejo paints are very popular for painting models and miniatures. It is also common for the paints to be used in an airbrush to speed up the process of painting. It is beneficial when the models or miniatures need a solid base coat before adding in more detail. - Source: Internet
- Once you decide to move to airbrushing, do yourself another favour and stay away from the cheap beginner airbrushes. Go for at least a semi-pro airbrush with internal atomizing where the paint is mixed with the air inside the airbrush body. External atomizing airbrushes create a much more coarse and rough paint spray, quite effective for painting large areas, but not very suitable for fine-scale model building. - Source: Internet
- Switching from a paintbrush to an airbrush costs quite a lot of money. Not only do you have to buy an airbrush, but you also need to buy an air compressor. Otherwise, the airbrush won’t work, right? - Source: Internet
- Some mundane aspects of painting miniatures and models will become more enjoyable. Highlighting miniatures will become fun in a different way. Your blends will smooth out, naturally, and color modulation techniques will bring new life to some models, especially scale model vehicles. Overall, you’ll find using an airbrush for painting miniatures a worthy challenge with fantastic rewards. Take a look at some of the models I airbrushed below or in my gallery (updated regularly). - Source: Internet
- Once you have an orange peel effect, the only solution is to gently sand the surfaces with a fine grade wet-and-dry sandpaper to remove the lumps and bumps. Keep the sandpaper wet all the time so you don’t scratch through the paint. When the paint finish is smooth again, wash off all the sanding residue, and let the model fully dry before repeating the painting. - Source: Internet
- A paint cup is attached to sides or the bottom of the airbrush body. As the airflow starts, paint is sucked from the paint cup and through the airbrush. The paint is mixed (atomized) with the air to microscopic paint particles, and is emitted through the nozzle of the airbrush as a very fine spray. - Source: Internet
- An inexpensive tool does have some advantages for those just getting started. Maintenance is the key to consistent results over the long term. - For airbrushing in model making, you can use almost any water-based acrylic paint. The advantage of this is that it is odorless and harmless to your health. Solvent-based paints can also be used. However, you should check beforehand whether your airbrush gun is suitable for this, because the seals often do not withstand frequent use of such paints. It is also important that you wear an airbrush breathing mask when working with solvent-based paints. - Source: Internet

- I might as well say it right away: air cans are by far the worst source of air you can use for your airbrush. First of all, they are quite expensive, and will, in the long run, add up to more money than a cheap compressor. But this is only the smallest of the troubles awaiting you if you go for this solution. - Source: Internet

- Siphon-bottom feed airbrushes are very popular for applications that require spraying large surfaces and need a lot of paint volume. A bottom-feed bottle can hold a near unlimited amount of paint and make switching colors easy. Just swap paint bottles and re-insert the siphon. For example, a lot of airbrush artists who paint T-shirts often use bottom-feed airbrushes, because they can work with many colors, quickly. - Source: Internet
- I’ve been guilty of getting overzealous when airbrushing inside my spray booth. I end up pointing the nozzle toward the walls and the sides of the spray booth; especially when I want to paint those hard-to-reach places on a model. This gets messy. - Source: Internet

- Even if the acrylic paint contains some additives, it is not harmful to your health Acrylic colors are available in different viscosities: You can fill with thick paint and pour with thin paint Disadvantages Primer paint is relatively aggressive and eats into the surface. With metals, this creates a good basis for the airbrushed paint. But with models made of plastic, this can sometimes be a problem due to the rough surface. - Source: Internet
- Shake your chosen paint Use a toothpick or thin wood to loosen any pigment Mix the paint with the solvent, then shake. Add the thinner to ensure the paint runs through your airbrush without hiccups. 1:3 is the ideal thinner-to-paint ratio to give you that perfect milky consistency you need. - Source: Internet
- On the subject of budget, getting everything you need for an airbrush setup can be a fairly substantial investment. The good news is that there is equipment available at a broad range of price levels, and even the mid-level in terms of price will get you quality that will last for many years. Some items you may only need to buy once and they will last a lifetime with care. As with many things in life, you may want to avoid the extremely cheap options if you don’t want to end up replacing too soon, but you don’t need to go top of the line to get decent quality either. - Source: Internet
- Of course, a weakness of this design is that the paint cup sits on top of the airbrush and blocks your view (somewhat, depending on the size of the paint cup). But, for the most part, you will easily compensate for this loss of full-visibility. What you gain in control is worth this small compromise. - Source: Internet

- I am also sometimes using an old cheap Chinese airbrush for spraying metallic paints. The reason is the fact, that metallics are difficult to clean perfectly. Many model builders like to have a separate airbrush for metallics. - Source: Internet
- There are always some parts of the model that will grab people’s attention, as I have already mentioned. For aircraft models, one such area is definitely the cockpit area and the canopy. Every minute of work done in this area will improve the model in a much higher degree than the same amount of work done for example to the underside of the wings. - Source: Internet
- Tools and Equipment are compulsory to perform any task efficiently. If you want to get marvelous results from the airbrush technique, you need the required items. Those kinds of basic parts are given below: - Source: Internet
- Don’t try to cover the surfaces with one heavy layer of paint, but paint several thin layers, letting the paint dry overnight between each application. Trust me – your patience will be rewarded later! For some colours, like white or yellow, you may have to paint as many as five or six layers before you have a solid, opaque film. If the paint appears to be covering after only one application, it is way too thick! It will not dry properly, it will cover up the fine details and it will leave bristle-marks on the model. - Source: Internet
- If you are a newbie in airbrushing, you may find it difficult to hold an airbrush. Practice makes you a perfect airbrush artist. So, firstly test painting on a simple printer page. Start airbrushing to analyze different spraying patterns and behaviors like consistency, shades, and coloring effects. - Source: Internet
- Single-action airbrush guns are useful for beginners. It has different control for pressure and paints flow. Its trigger controls the air volume, and the knob regulates the flow of paint. - To clean out the paint cup between colour changes, empty any excess paint by inverting the airbrush and pouring back into the bottle or pot, or some other container for disposal. Spray any remaining paint out into your cleaning pot until the airbrush sprays clean air. Now pour a little cleaning fluid into the cup, agitate with a paintbrush and invert the airbrush again to pour out. Repeat this process but this time spray the cleaning fluid through the airbrush into the cleaning pot. Repeat again until the cleaning fluid appears clear in the cup. - Source: Internet

- The cockpit on most modern aircraft is partially hidden under the windshield and canopy. Other aircraft can even have much more complex glazed areas, such as the nose areas of WWII bombers with their intricate glass panel birdcages. Even the simplest one-piece canopy is quite a challenge for model builders, as you normally want to paint the canopy frames, without painting the glazed areas. - Source: Internet
- Unfortunately, a normal painting will not always get you all the way to the finishing line. The problem is that not all aircraft are painted; many of them are flying around in their natural metal birth suit. Representing this metal surface may very well be one of the most difficult jobs you will ever face during your modelling career, and many modellers tend to shy away from natural metal finishes. - Source: Internet
- The substances contained in water-soluble paints are usually not harmful. But if you work a lot with additives, thinners, or even lacquer-based paints, you should wear a mask. Then you are immediately recommended the appropriate respiratory protection masks. They may be a little unfamiliar at first, but you will soon get used to them. In addition, think about good ventilation of the workspace and an airbrush exhaust system, which belongs to airbrush and clean air. - Source: Internet
